Tips to Get You Started on Meal Prep
“I would love to meal prep but don’t know where to start. I tried to prep my food but it got so overwhelming that I gave up.” These are some of the questions many would comment when you mention meal prepping. Yes, it may seem time consuming and overwhelming. But meal prepping is easy once you get the hang of it.
Meal prep saves you time, money and hassle and it’s a lifesaver when you are in a hurry but want to whip up something healthy. Best thing about meal prepping is you don’t have to spend all your money on takeout food or wasting time stopping somewhere after work to grab food.
Meal prepping is all about time management and organisation. By prepping your individual meals ahead of time, you’re less likely to eat junk, overeat and stress about your next meal. Here’s some tips to get you started:
1. No time?
Pick a day that suits your schedule. The most important is to find a few undisturbed hours to prep. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll probably need about 2 hours the most (including cleanup).
2. Get your tools ready.
Get storage containers of various sizes that are BPA-free and organise your fridge before you get started. And of course, you need your cutting tools too.
3. Create your meal plan
Before you start shopping, it’s best to create a meal plan or else you will end up with overloaded groceries and junk. You can start by meal prepping for 5 days for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Your meals should consist of protein, healthy starch and fats and loads of veggies.
4. Make the most of your time
Start by cooking foods that take the longest to prep. If 2 recipes consist of the same ingredients, prep for both recipes and divide according to use.
Whatever meal you plan to prep, don’t stress yourself out. Start out slowly, plan wisely to avoid food and money wastage and you will be on your way to a healthy diet and lifestyle. Have fun prepping!
